Last Sunday afternoon, my 5 year old son and I were driving past the bus stop. Sitting alone, under the bench, waiting for a bus to take her anywhere but here, was a horribly abused Pit Bull puppy. I immediately pulled over.

My son and I jumped out of the car and went straight to this poor soul whose body was ravished with the most severe case of mange I had ever seen. Most of her body was hairless, bright red and extremely hot to the touch. Her face and entire body were intermittently covered in scabs and open, bleeding sores.

We had no trouble getting the starved and clearly dehydrated puppy to come to us. She smelled of sweet rotting flesh and oozed a yellow puss when petted.

I took Peppermint Patty, as my son and I called her due to her sweet nature and red and white skin coloring, to Petsmart's Banfield veterinary office. The staff was very helpful and caring.

We were rushed into an examination room where Pepper, for short, was given food and water. We spent the next 3 hours waiting on pins and needles as to a conclusion that Pepper was going to live!

Over the next few days, my children and I nursed Pepper until she had enough energy to walk again. I knew she was going to be fine when she wagged her tail Monday afternoon.

She began coming out of her safe place after a grueling 48 hours (her open doored crate) and would come sleep under my desk while I worked. Like in the story of Noah's Ark when the released dove returned with an olive branch, when Pepper brought me a little stuffed cow to play tug of war I knew a miracle had happened! Peppermint Patty was going to have a normal life.

If you are interested in sponsoring Peppermint Patty while she recovers to or possibly would like to permanently adopt Pepper, please go to: www.texasgreatdane.org and look up her profile.

She gets along with everything- cats, toddlers, other dogs, and is not scared of anything. She is an amazing inspiration to us all!!
